The article analyzes the peculiarities of the formation and functioning of migration systems in Latin American countries. The authors endeavor to present the historical context of the evolution of these models in order to reveal the main causes and factors of migratory influx. They offer a classification of migration policies, dividing countries into three categories according to the degree of transparency and flexibility, emphasize the importance of collecting and analyzing information on international migration to understand the dynamics and specificities of migration flows in the region. They summarize the mechanisms for registering external migrants, the entities responsible for them, and the legislative norms governing this area. The role of international organizations in collecting and presenting the corresponding information is highlighted. The article contributes to the study of migration processes and systems in Latin America and to the design of efficient migration policies in this area. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
