Influence of sex and age on manifestations of sinonasal symptoms in children and adolescents with comorbid course of allergic rhinitis (AR) and bronchial asthma (BA) remains unstudied. Objective. To study age-related and sex-specific influence on the domains of validated SNOT-22 (Syno-Nasal Outcome Test 22) questionnaire domains in children and adolescents with comorbid course of BA and AR. Patients and methods. The number of patients with BA and AR equal 214 aged from 5 to 17 years was examined. The following periods were identified according to the age: childhood (CH) — up to 9 years old; early adolescence (EA) — from 10 to 14 years old; middle adolescence (MA) — from 15 to 17 years old. Sinonasal symptoms were assessed by means of the SNOT-22 and with assignment of rhinological and non-rhinological blocks of questions in each patient. Results. Totally, the sum of SNOT-22 scores was statistically significantly higher in patients in MA compared to CH and EA in the general group of patients (p=0.006) and in the group of girls (p=0.003), but not in the group of boys (p=0.35). Rhinological domain values increased as patients got older regardless of sex (all p<0 .05). the total score of non-rhinological domains was comparable in all age periods in the general group and in the group of boys (all p>0.05), however a tendency towards symptoms increasing in girls (p=0.09) has been noted. Patients with cystic polypoid changes in the mucosa of the nose and/or paranasal sinuses had the highest values of total SNOT-22 score. Conclusion. Sex and age may have a modifying effect on the SNOT-22 sinonasal test scores in children and adolescents with BA and AR. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
