Alternative models of the passive state of metals. I. Basic concepts

Modern concepts on the operating mechanism of a passivating oxide layer are analyzed. With this purpose, the models of the processes that occur in the bulk and on the interfaces of the layer are considered. The problem of comparing the existing alternative models is posed.
