The paper focuses on the development of rhetorical skills with undergraduate students within the framework of building their scientific research competence. By emphasizing the logical component of the scientific research competence, the authors argue that the classical rhetorical canons, taken in conjunction with the categories of ethos, pathos and logos, lay the foundation of scientific reasoning with the students. The major challenges faced by students and educators are highlighted based on the Aristotelian concept of rhetoric adjusted to cater to the needs of boosting the scientific research competence.
