Cuando los conquistadores de España y de Portugal invadieron el continente latinoamericano habian sido estimulados, tanto por motivos mercantiles, como por motivos de caracter ambicioso y religioso. Empezó un persistente y sistemático infundimiento del catolicismo. América Latina se convierte en un continente católico. Durante los ultimos 50 años la idea de Jesuscristo del antiguo testamento revolucionariza la religion cristiana y provoca el surgimiento de la teologia de la liberacion.
