CONSEQUENCES OF THE CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT DISASTER AND ASSESSMENT OF THE CONTENT OF MAN-MADE RADIONUCLIDES IN FOOD PRODUCTS OF THE KALUGA REGION

The accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 led to radioactive contamination of vast territories of Russia and neighboring countries. The Kaluga Region was the most polluted on the territory of the Russian Federation, being in second place in terms of the area of territories with a level of cesium-137 from 5 to 15 Ki/km2 and in fourth place in terms of the total area of territories contaminated with cesium. Monitoring of radiation safety indicators of the human environment, including food products, is carried out by the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being. The number of control points and the frequency of sampling are determined by the current radiation situation in the territory. To date, the Rospotrebnadzor service monitors products sold in markets and stores. Radiation monitoring is not carried out in subsidiary farms.
