While the building sector increasingly prioritizes energy-efficient buildings, the broader implications of sustainable living are often overlooked. The paper examines whether the notion of "sustainable homes" receives sufficient attention to facilitate large-scale societal transitions towards sustainable lifestyles and building practices within finite ecological limits. Focusing on a new Swedish development area presented as a pioneer in sustainable building and planning, the study explores conceptualizations of the sustainable home in this "green" housing project. It analyzes the challenges faced by such developments, considering factors like the historical shift from government-funded housing to market-driven development, changing household demands, and the influence of evolving norms on design and development.
