There is no recognized discipline called medical linguistics, but the language of medicine challenges medical historians and linguists. English medical terminology developed from medieval Latin terminology, absorbed a developed Greek terminology, words from Anglo-Saxon English and French language. As English has become the lingua franca in the field of medicine a brief overview of the history and characteristics of the language used by medical doctors is presented in this article.
