Phraseological cognition in translation: the case of food-related verb locutions; [La cognición fraseológica en traducción: el caso de las locuciones verbales relacionadas con la alimentación]

Cognitive phraseology in the field of teaching during translator training represents a little-explored area to date. Despite the existence of phraseodidactic materials, they do not seem to approach translation from a global perspective, neglecting the cultural and pragmatic approach essential for the search for phraseological equivalences. Phraseological cognition is an essential component of translation, as it involves the understanding and appropriate use of fixed phrases, idioms, and other phraseological units (PhU). These units are often difficult to translate, as their meaning cannot be deduced solely from the sum of the meanings of their constituents. Hence, there is an urgent need to advocate methodologies that respond to the new educational challenges in the field of phraseology. Starting from the premise that to produce accurate and culturally appropriate translations, translators must have an in-depth understanding of phraseological cognition in both the source language (SL) and the target language (TL), this paper focuses on the importance of cognitive semantics as a motivating agent, as well as on the implementation of concept maps (CM) as a didactic strategy for translation. After analysing the idiomatic nature of UFs, it is concluded, through a phraseological essay composed of food-related verbal locutions (VL), that the incorporation of the cognitivist approach applied to translation may be beneficial for learners. In other words, this approach can facilitate the process of phraseological acquisition, and improve their TL, as well as the ability to use PhU in context. © 2023 Universidad de Cordoba,Servicio de Publicaciones.
