Based on the authors’ sociological research, the article outlines the main characteristics of the motivational and value components of creating a family in the views of student youth in modern Russian society. The key barriers that hinder the creation of a student family are identified. They include: persistent ideas about the need to achieve socio-economic maturity, the spread of an orientation towards testing relationships, the combination of romanticization of feelings in ideas about the foundations of the family and a sober assessment of the material resources necessary to ensure it, destruction of the value of chastity and the creation of a couple for life. © 2023 Ivanovo State University Publishing.
