The research investigates the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the contribution of the tourism sector to India’s GDP. Before the onset of the pandemic, tourism was a cornerstone of India’s economy, showcasing steady growth and accounting for a substantial portion of national income. The sector generated significant revenue and provided millions of jobs, fostering economic development and cultural exchange. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 brought about unprecedented challenges, resulting in a dramatic decline in tourist arrivals and an associated drop in revenue. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, and health concerns led to widespread cancellations of bookings, severally crippling businesses reliant on tourism. Consequently, these resulted in massive job losses and financial stability for countless individuals and families. This research aims to explore the multifaceted ways in which the pandemic disrupted tourism’s economic role in India, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted recovery initiatives. Strategic measures (e.g., promoting domestic tourism, enhancing health and safety protocols, and leveraging digital technology) are crucial to revitalizing the industry. By implementing these initiatives, India can restore the significance of tourism as a vital driver of economic growth and resilience in the post-pandemic landscape. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
