Carbon dioxide laser in abdominoplasty

Introduction. Abdominoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgeries. However, it is associated with multiple complications compared to other surgical interventions. This is due to significant tissue damage. Consequently, high-energy lasers are potentially perspective for ab-dominoplasty to reduce traumatic impact. Material and methods. The authors compared abdominoplasty using high-energy CO2 laser in 35 patients and control group of 34 patients (diathermocoagulation). Results. Laser flap dissection followed by treatment with defocused laser significantly reduced the risk of postoperative seroma from 26.5% to 8.6% (p=0.050) and hematoma from 8.8% to 2.9% (p=0.289). There were no cases of skin necrosis (p=0.072). This technique also reduces exudation and provides postoperative wound drainage within 24 hours in 94.3% of patients. Conclusion. The promising results of high-energy lasers suggest their application in abdominoplasty for medical centers equipped with necessary technologies. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
