Sociological research shows that domestic violence is regarded by most Russians as an acute social problem. Besides, the share of people who hold this opinion has grown over the last five years. Official statistics testify to the urgency of counteracting domestic violence. At the same time, criminologists today feel a serious lack of information about this phenomenon, the public opinion about it, the readiness of people to counteract it, and people's expectations in this regard. In 2024, a research group is conducting a study named "Legal Regulation of Domestic Violence Counteraction in the Russian Federation" funded by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation. Statistic reports of Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs since 2015 on crimes connected with domestic violence have been studied. In March 2024, the group conducted an all-Russian survey (with 1600 respondents aged 18 and older). Results of monitoring the enforcement of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation in domestic violence cases have been analyzed. The authors present criminologically relevant results of their research and compare them with the results of the 2019 study conducted within a state contract with the State Duma of the Russian Federation. The authors draw conclusions regarding trend dynamics in domestic violence crimes and assess changes in public opinion regarding them. Using the results of monitoring the enforcement of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, they single out a number of theoretically and practically relevant features of these crimes.
